Art and Healing Certificate Program

Ringling College of Art and Design,
Continuing Studies and Special Programs
(941) 955-8866  or  cssp@ringling.edu

Designed and taught by Kathleen Horne and Victoria Domenichello-Anderson,  this certificate program provides an innovative, experientially based comprehensive overview of this emerging field. Students engage in a growth-oriented program that includes academic study along with a deep personal process and applications for working with people in a variety of settings. Students who are new to art will explore a variety of art media, and learn their personal preferences as they develop their authentic creative style. Fine arts electives further the refinement of art-making skills.

While the program is grounded in visual art, there is also an "intermodal" component, in which explorations in movement, music, sound, writing, drama and guided visualization provide a more holistic experience.

Readings and classes provide an overview of several theoretical models and approaches.

The Art and Healing certificate program is based on the strong belief in the power of the arts and creativity inherent in every person. In a progression of classes, the instructors provide a safe and accepting atmosphere for learning new skills, evoking and developing your individual creative style, and working deeply with one's own personal process. We believe that anything that we ask a client, student or patient to do, we should have already done ourselves.

This program is advantageous for counselors, mental health therapists, health-care providers, educators, and anyone interested in supplementing their professional work with art. It is also beneficial for people who are seriously interested in a format for working authentically on their own personal and creative growth. Students and potential students are encouraged to speak with an adviser to discover creative ways to bring this work into the world.
